Larry Wayne Hargis entered his heavenly home August 5, 2022, at Bradley County Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was born September 7, 1939 to the late Barney Lee “Dutch” Hargis and Willie Belle Adams Hargis. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter Denisa Kay Hargis. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Virginia Saunders Hargis and a sister Nancy Hargis Harrison of Fordyce. One son, Bart Hargis of Warren; three daughters Lynn Hearnsberger (Monty) of Banks, Lydia Reynolds (Randy) of Warren, and Melody Ferguson (John) of Hermitage; 18 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

He was a 1957 graduate of the Banks High School. He later enlisted in the Marine Corp in 1962 and later transferred to the Army National Guard Reserves where he was honorably discharged in 1968.

Larry was a lifetime farmer. In his younger years he and Virginia raised many acres of tomatoes along with a cattle farm. He sold his tomatoes at the Warren Tomato Auction and to many personal customers who returned year after year for their Bradley tomatoes. When he wasn’t raising tomatoes, he worked as a millwright for the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners Union Local 216 where he was a 60+ year member.

Larry loved to hunt, fish, raise a garden and watch the Arkansas Razorbacks. He enjoyed sharing the produce from his garden with family and friends. He raised a garden to the very end and although he couldn’t tend to it, his family all helped. Additionally, he was a 19 year survivor of lung cancer. He was told by his doctor that, for him, he has changed the phrase tough as a boot because he thought he was the boot.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 9, 2022 at Frazer’s Funeral Home. Burial was in Ebenezer Cemetery by Frazer’s Funeral Home.
