Shelba Jean Glosson Cox Herring, 86, of Warren, passed away on Saturday, November 16. She spent her final time surrounded by friends and family, wrapped in love. Shelba was preceded by two husbands: Benjamin Leon Cox, J.D. (Johnathan David) Herring, one son, one daughter, and two grandchildren. She is survived by four children: Leon Neal Cox, Timothy Cox, Susan White, and Johnathan David Herring, II, her 11 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. Shelba was a well-known and respected member of the Warren community and a beloved pillar of her family. If asked to describe Shelba, most would say she was an ornery, stubborn, no-nonsense woman who did not shy away from saying exactly what was on her mind. You could always count on knowing exactly where you stood with her and if asked, she would give you the truth no matter good or bad. Little known to most, the rough and tough southern lady persona protected a heart that was overflowing with love and affection for the people she cared about. Her capacity for love and acceptance let her see no line between blood ties and family of the heart. There was no difference to her and her love was equal and mutual. Her love for her family changed Shelba in the most wonderful ways. These changes affected her family in the most profound ways, and through her they learned to love just as fiercely. One of her favorite stories to tell was about getting pulled over in her 1971 Thunderbird, and it tickled her pink when the officer said, “Lady some birds were meant to fly, but this ain’t one of ‘em”. Now she can fly as fast and high as she wants with her mom who was her angel. Shelba was a horse riding, book loving, gun toting country woman who will never be replaced and will be forever missed by all who truly knew her. Fly fast Shelba and be at peace.
