Lumberjacks send Ricebirds flying home, 42-7

The Warren Lumberjacks sent the Stuttgart Ricebirds home in defeat with a final score of 42-7 in the season opening game Friday night.

The Ricebirds won the coin toss and elected to receive. The Ricebirds weren’t able to get far being forced to punt at the 15-yard line, which went out of bounds.

Freshman quarterback Jackson Denton threw an incomplete pass from the 35-yard line to the end zone.

Denton performed a handoff to senior Treylon Jackson who made it to the 10-yard line. Denton handed off the ball to Treylon Jackson again who was tackled at the one-yard line.

At 9:22 left in the first quarter, a four-yard touchdown pass from Antonio Jordan to Neon’dre Thomas at the end zone gave the Lumberjacks the first touchdown of the night. New kicker for the Lumberjacks, Allen Juarez gave the team the extra point. The Lumberjacks were in the lead 7-0.

The Lumberjacks defense kept the Ricebirds on their toes, forcing them to punt at the 23-yard line at 4:05 in the first quarter.

At 2:12 in the first quarter, Jackson Denton threw a complete pass to Thomas from the 27-yard line to the end zone. The kick by Juarez was no good, but the Lumberjacks remained in the lead 13-0.

As the first quarter came to a close with 45 seconds left, Denton threw an impressive pass from the 44-yard line to the end zone. The Lumberjacks attempt at a two-point conversion was good.

The Lumberjacks went into the second quarter in the lead 21-0.

The Lumberjacks made another touchdown at 8:40 in the second quarter after Denton passed to Davis for a big 64-yard play to the end zone.

After Juarez’s good kick, the Lumberjacks continued to lead 28-0.

The Ricebirds made their first touchdown with 4:35 left in the second quarter, with a seven-yard rushing touchdown. The score was then 28-7.

The Lumberjacks led in the third quarter.

Denton made an impressive 24-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Jordan with 10:18 left in the quarter.

Denton performed another touchdown pass to Davis with a 65-yard touchdown pass. The Lumberjacks performed a successful two-point conversion by Jordyn Ingram led to the lead with 42-7.

In the fourth and final quarter, the game officials implemented sportsmanship rule where the clock continues to run throughout the quarter.

The Lumberjacks rushed 77 yards, had 323 passing yards, and had 400 yards of total offense.

Jackson rushed 10 times for 61 yards.

Denton had five touchdown passes.

The Lumberjacks play against the White Hall Bulldogs at their home turf on Friday, September 1 at 7 p.m.
