It is often said that it is nearly impossible to beat a good team four times in a single season. On Friday afternoon, the Warren Lady Jacks came agonizingly close to proving that old sports adage right, fighting until their very last breath before falling 7-4 to the Monticello Lady Billies in the 2026 Arkansas Class 4A State Softball Championship.
The stage was historic—Jackie Robinson Field at Majestic Park in Hot Springs, the legendary cradle of Major League Baseball spring training. The stakes were even higher this time around. Despite dropping three regular-season contests to their conference rivals, the Lady Jacks entered the dugout with a clean slate and the heart of a champion.
While the final score didn't swing in Warren's favor, the Lady Jacks proved they belonged on the state's biggest stage, pushing the top-ranked Lady Billies to the absolute brink in a tense seven-inning thriller.
Warren wasted no time putting pressure on Monticello ace Addi Frazer. In the top of the first, Haven Johnson battled through a full count to lace a sharp single to left field. After a pair of strikeouts, the Lady Jacks kept the inning alive with a gritty, full-count walk, pushing two runners aboard. A deep drive to center field looked promising but was tracked down for the final out, leaving two stranded.
Monticello struck first in the bottom of the second, using a solo home run by Frazer to take a 1-0 lead.
Unfazed, the Orange and Black roared back in the top of the third with a furious, two-run rally. Warren sparked the offense by drawing a full-count walk. Moments later, Haven Johnson drove a clutch single to right field, chasing home the tying run and making it 1-1.
With the momentum shifting, Bayleigh Miller stepped into the box and crushed a spectacular double into the right-central field gap. The ball rattled to the wall, scoring the go-ahead run and giving the Lady Jacks a 2-1 lead, sending the traveling Warren crowd into a frenzy.
The turning point of the afternoon came in the bottom of the third. The Lady Billies engineered a heavy counter-attack, capitalizing on hit batters, walks, and timely bounce-balls to push five runs across.
A grounder to third base secured a necessary force-out at the bag for Warren, but Monticello tied the game 2-2. Misfortune followed for the Warren defense, as a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and a few defensive base hits allowed the Lady Billies to keep the carousel moving. By the time Warren halted the damage, Monticello had jumped out to a 6-2 lead.
The Lady Jacks refused to fold. In the top of the fourth, they instantly put the pressure back on Monticello. Natalie Hargraves single to center, followed by a sharp infield single, put two runners on with no one out. However, Frazer managed to escape the jam with consecutive strikeouts, leaving Warren's runners stranded.
Monticello tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single to extend their lead to 7-2, but the Lady Jacks' defense dug in, turning away further damage and keeping the game within reach.
Warren mounted another major threat in the top of the fifth. Bayleigh Miller picked up her second hit of the afternoon with a sharp single to left, followed by a walk to put two runners aboard. With two outs, a hard line drive to third resulted in an error that loaded the bases for Warren. The Lady Jacks were just one hit away from blowing the game wide open, but a flyout to left field ended the threat.
Warren's pitching and defense locked down in the late frames to give the offense a chance, holding the high-powered Lady Billies completely scoreless through both the fifth and sixth innings.
Down to their final three outs and trailing by five, the Lady Jacks put together a seventh-inning rally that showed the true spirit of Warren softball.
Bayleigh Miller started the fireworks with a magnificent double to center field. Charlee Wardlaw immediately followed with an explosive double of her own, driving in Miller to trim the deficit to 7-3. An infield single put runners on the corners with nobody out, bringing the tying run to the plate and putting Monticello firmly on the ropes.
Then came the heartbreak. Natalie Hargraves launched a sinking liner into shallow center field that looked destined to drop for an RBI single. Instead, Monticello centerfielder Joanie Jeffers made a spectacular, full-extension diving catch. A run scored on the sacrifice fly to make it 7-4, but the spectacular defensive play robbed Warren of a massive big-inning opportunity.
A gritty full-count walk kept the line moving, placing the tying run back at the plate with only one out. The Lady Jacks fought through tough pitches, but Frazer managed to pick up a clutch strikeout for out number two.
With a 1-2 count, Warren's final batter battled hard but swung through a final fastball to end the ballgame.
While the Lady Jacks take home the State Runner-Up trophy, this team proved their heart, resilience, and pride on the biggest stage in Arkansas. Congratulations to the Warren Lady Jacks on an unforgettable 2026 season!
