Warren School District shares goals for upcoming school year

The Warren School Board had the annual report to the public at their monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 17. The reports to the public were presented by the administrators in each school and the district. The reports to the public share the goals for the school year.

The Warren School District is 235 square miles with 10 bus routes. Buses cover 338 miles.

Student enrollment showed a decrease of five students for the current school year. The enrollment total is 1,418. The student demographics are 34.13 percent white, 35.40 percent black, 26.94 percent Hispanic or Latino, 0.85 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Hawaii or Pacific Islander, 2.33 percent bi-racial and 0.21 percent Asian.

Carla Wardlaw, Assistant Superintendent, presented the district’s report. Their focus is to create a school community culture that values reading throughout the community.

The district and school wide goals focused on improving math and reading scores in state assessment tests. Some grades met the goals and some had not.

The principals discussed their goals and actions they are taking to reach those goals.

The school board approved two board to board student transfers from Warren to Hermitage School District.

Warren Middle School announced it is ending its charter program. The motion was approved to not renew their charter contract.

A memorandum of understanding was approved by the board to allow South Arkansas College to train 12 AHF workers.

Another memorandum was approved allowing Arkansas Construction Education Foundation to serve students at SEACBEC.

The school district purchased new security cameras at Warren Middle School for $43,507 through a grant.

There will be a public hearing for the Facilities Master Plan on November 13 at the school board meeting.

Warren School Superintendent Bryan Cornish reported the district received a Goal Community RISE Award. Playground equipment was installed at Warren Elementary School. Mainline Health’s on campus clinic has had 106 medical visits and 105 mental health visits in September.

The school board approved the following resignations: Coleman Horn, Warren High School Science instructor effective October 11; Erick Roebuck, Warren High School Literacy Instructor effective at the end of his contract; and Mayra Rodriguez, ABC Paraprofessional effective September 22.

The school board approved the following hire recommendations: Michael Wessell for Warren Middle School Science instructor; and Justin Glauser for E-sport coach.

The next school board meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, November 13 at the Warren School Administration Building.
