Warren races past Watson Chapel with explosive first half

The Warren Lumberjacks wasted no time putting on a show Friday night at Jim Hurley Jr. Stadium, rolling to a commanding 42-0 halftime lead and cruising past the Watson Chapel Wildcats in a non-conference matchup.

The Jacks (2-1) needed approximately 20 offensive plays in the first half to pile up 42 points, thanks to an explosive performance from running back Aaron Davis and a smothering defense that left the Wildcats still searching for their first win of the season.

Warren set the tone immediately after forcing a three-and-out on Watson Chapel’s opening drive. On the Lumberjacks’ first offensive play, Davis broke loose for a 69-yard touchdown run, giving Warren a 7-0 edge.

After another quick stop, the Jacks capitalized on a short punt with a strong return from Blayze Fellows. A few plays later, Davis powered in from two yards out for his second score. Warren had run just four plays but already led 14-0.

Moments later, Davis struck again. After a penalty trimmed a fourth-down play to just three yards to go, Davis burst through the line for a 29-yard touchdown, making it 21-0 late in the opening quarter.

Quarterback Jackson Denton added to the fireworks on the first play of the second quarter, connecting with Josiah Steen for a 29-yard scoring strike. Then, after another defensive stand, Denton found Tashawn Edwards for a 39-yard touchdown pass to extend the margin to 35-0.

Warren’s final touchdown of the night came with 2:24 remaining in the half when Davis capped off his third score, this one from seven yards out, giving the senior back a hat trick before intermission.

The Lumberjack defense was relentless all evening. Zechariah Bush disrupted multiple plays in the backfield, while the secondary forced incompletions and smothered Watson Chapel’s passing attack. The Wildcats managed just a handful of first downs in the first half, often negating progress with costly penalties.

With the sportsmanship rule in effect, the second half saw a running clock and plenty of substitutions. Neither side found the end zone after halftime, but Warren’s reserves gained valuable experience in the 42-0 shutout.

Davis finished his night with three rushing touchdowns, while Denton threw for two more. The Jacks’ defense pitched its most dominant performance of the season, keeping Watson Chapel off the scoreboard and controlling the line of scrimmage.

The win moves Warren to 2-1 on the season heading into their bye week. The Lumberjacks will open conference play at home against DeWitt on September 26.
