Warren Lumberjacks slay the DeWitt Dragons 47-20

The Lumberjacks had another victory at their homecoming game against the DeWitt Dragons on Friday, 47-20. The Lumberjacks continue their undefeated streak in the conference, 5-0 and 6-1 in the season so far.

“Offensively, I thought we executed really well and we played the best game we’ve had as far as executing,” said Lumberjack Coach Bo Hembree. “But defensively, we have to be able to play the pass better. [DeWitt] hit some pass plays on us early. The onside kick they had early in the game, we can’t have. We just have to keep working. [The win] puts us in a great position to win the conference now. That was our first goal and now we can kinda relax a little bit as far as that’s concerned. Now we got to get ready for playoffs.”

The Lumberjacks began winning the coin toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff.

Less than a minute in the game, quarterback Maddox Lassiter got the ball to Antonio Jordan for a 61-yard touchdown pass. However, the extra point was no good. The Lumberjacks led 6-0.

The Dragons scored their first touchdown at 7:03. After a successful extra point, the Dragons led against the Lumberjacks, 7-6.

A play after the kickoff, the Dragons made an interception, putting them back on offense.

The Dragons made progress down the 20-yard line, where the wide receiver ran the ball to the end zone, but a flag was thrown on the play against the Dragons for holding.

With 5:26 left of the first quarter, the Dragons’ quarterback passed to their wide receiver at the end zone for a touchdown. Their kick was good, keeping them in the lead, 12-6.

At 5:00 left, Lassiter threw a 35-yard pass to Neon’dre Thomas at the 10-yard line.

At the next play, Lassiter rushed through the Dragons’ defense for a touchdown. The Lumberjacks’ two-point conversion was no good, the Lumberjacks had 12-14.

Later in the quarter, the Dragons were forced to punt from the 48-yard line.

With the Lumberjacks at the 31-yard line, Lassiter made a 68-yard pass to Antonio Jordan at the end zone for a touchdown. With a successful two-point conversion, the Lumberjacks were back in the lead, 20-14.

The Lumberjacks continued to play well in the second quarter.

Lassiter threw a 40-yard pass to Thomas who made it to the 41-yard line.

At 11:02, the Lumberjacks attempted to score a touchdown, but a flag was thrown against them for holding.

At 3:23 left in the second quarter, Lassiter ran the ball from the 47-yard line to the end zone for a touchdown. The extra point by kicker Jose Jacinto was good, giving the Lumberjacks 34-14.

Neeyo Harding made an interception at the 42-yard line.

The Lumberjacks went into the second half in the lead.

Lassiter made a 52-yard pass to Thomas at the 15-yard line.

At the next play, Landon Wolfe got the ball 15 yards to the end zone for another touchdown.

Jacinto’s kick was good, keeping the Lumberjacks in the lead, 41-14.

The next touchdown occurred early in the fourth quarter by the Lumberjacks.

Lassiter connected to Jordan with another touchdown pass.

The Lumberjacks’ two-point conversion was no good, but they remained in the lead with 47-20.

The Dragons managed to score a touchdown with five minutes left in the game. Their extra point attempt was no good, making the score 47-20 and the final score of the night.

Lassiter went for 401 passing yards and three touchdowns. He also had 76 yards on eight carries and two touchdowns.

Jordan caught all three of Lassiter’s touchdown passes and he posted 251 receiving yards.

Thomas had 137 yards on three catches.

The Lumberjacks’ offense had a total of 641 yards in the game.

Weston Gavin had 13 tackles.

Delfino Rivera had seven tackles.

The Lumberjacks will face off against their rivals, the Monticello Billies at the Union Bank and Trust Salive River Shootout. The game will be at 7 p.m. on Friday in Monticello.
