Warren City Council discuss local property issues and city codes

The Warren City Council complimented the work city employees’ work with the Pink Tomato Festival. Warren Mayor Denisa Pennington commended the Warren Street Department and sanitation department for their work on cleaning up the streets over the weekend of the Pink Tomato Festival. Mayor Pennington said the Pink Tomato Festival was “very successful.” She also said the Warren Police Department did not have any trouble. Sanitation manager Rob Johnson said his workers also did a great job over the festival weekend.

The city council approved to sell one of the police vehicles, a 2012 Dodge Durango. The city council also approved an ordinance allowing Wash and Shine to work with the city.

Alderman Joel Tolefree commented that some parents were concerned about elementary kids buying knives at the festival.

The city council and sanitation Manager Rob Johnson discussed some of the issues they had with properties not meeting city codes. Johnson said he would seek clarity on the current ordinances about the properties and get advice from the city council.

A property at 505 Myrtle was cleaned up through a controlled burn by the Warren Fire Department, which they used for training.

Alderman Zachary Burks said a property on Howard Street was cleaned up by the city once before, but was back to violating city codes. Johnson said he attempted to contact the individual on the lot, but neighbors told Johnson the city should leave the property owner alone. Johnson stated for anyone who has complaints about property, to file a formal complaint with his office or show up to the city council meetings.

In other business, Warren Police Chief Shaun Hildreth reported the Warren Police Department received a new police truck. He also stated the other vehicles they’ve ordered will not be in until 2023.

Warren Fire Chief Chuck Moore reported the Warren Fire Department responded to only 10 calls in the month of May.

The next city council meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, July 11. The meeting will be held at the Warren Municipal Building.
