Warren City Council approves property condemnation list

The Warren City Council approved the property condemnation list from Building Official Rob Johnson at the Warren City Council meeting on Monday, September 11. The properties on the condemnation list were South Myrtle Street Partial, 1007 Phillips Street, 504 Rock Street, 407 Turner Street, 107 Shields Street, 108 West Central Street, 1720 West Pine Street, and Etheridge Street and the corner lot. The properties that required action by the city council were 407 Turner Street, 108 West Central Street, 504 Rock Street, and South Myrtle Street Partial.

The following streets were approved by the street committee to be chip sealed: John C. Moss Street from Central Street to Sturgis Street; and Cedar Street from Gannaway Street to 619 East Gannaway Street.

The following streets were approved to be paved in the city: Lynn Street; Hickory Street to Parks Street; Hickory Street to Beavers Street; Stepps Street; Maple Street; Pope Street; Bailey Street, and a portion of Packard Street and Bryant Street.

The city council approved streets to close for the Homecoming Parade and the Christmas Parade.

There was a resolution to levy the five-mil tax for city general operations. This is not a tax increase. It is renewed each year.

The city council approved a resolution to apply for a grant. The grant would go toward repairs at the Warren Cultural Center.

The city council heard from members of the public.

Denise Lewis, a student from Warren High School, asked the city council permission to use the armory to decorate the sophomore’s Homecoming Parade float. The city council approved the request.

Billy Joe Harding spoke before the city council stating he had problems with the property next door not being cleaned up. He showed photos to the city council.

Edith Strong asked the city council what plans were there for recreation for the youth in Warren.

Jimmy Dominic spoke before the city council about RV’s in his neighborhood. He said people were living in the RV’s. It was brought up there’s an ordinance not allowing a person to live in an RV in the city limits, but they can have it parked on their property.

Warren Fire Chief Chuck Moore reported the Warren Fire Department responded to 12 calls in August. The fire department hired the following to be volunteer firefighters: Landon Jolley, Deangelo Brown, and Jose Castro De La Cruz. There are 31 total volunteer firefighters. Chief Moore said the fire department has two vacant volunteer firefighter positions. If interested, contact the Warren Fire Department.

Sanitation Manager Johnson reported equipment was running good. He said they are looking to hire a CDL Driver and a thrower. 

Street Foreman Monty Hearnsberger reported the street department was cleaning up ditches and were preparing to lay asphalt on the streets. The city council approved bids from Jet Asphalt to do the streets.

The city council approved Jolley Lights to do the Christmas decorations downtown Warren. Jolley Lights did the Christmas decorations last year.

The next city council meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 10 at the Warren Municipal Building.
