Lumberjacks defeat McGehee Owls 40-26

The Warren Lumberjacks pulled off another victory Friday night beating the McGehee Owls 40-26. “It was another tough one, we knew going in [the Owls] were undefeated. They were really physical. They’re [running] backs were hard to tackle. They played extremely hard. We were very fortunate to come out with a win,” said Lumberjack Coach Bo Hembree. “I thought our kids played extremely hard and kept battling. We showed some signs of getting better tonight and being a real good football team. We just need to get back to work and see what we can do and keep fighting.”

The Lumberjacks started the game on offense.

Only two minutes into the game, the Lumberjacks scored a touchdown when quarterback Maddox Lassiter passed to Antonio Jordan who carried it in for a 29-yard touchdown. The extra-point kick by Jose Jacinto hit the goal post and was no good. The Lumberjacks led 6-0.

At 5:53 in the first quarter, the Owls scored a touchdown from the four-yard line. However, their attempt at a two-point conversion failed, tying them with the Lumberjacks 6-6.

The Lumberjacks made their way to the nine-yard line. Lassiter threw an eight-yard pass to Kam Davis, scoring another touchdown, putting the Jacks up 12-6.

After a flag on the first extra point kick attempt the Lumberjacks attempted a two-point conversion but the offensive line was not able to break through.

On the ensuing kickoff, the Owls ran around the Lumberjacks for an 80-yard dash before being tackled by Kam Davis at the 20-yard line.

The play put the Owls in scoring position and they took advantage of the opportunity. After a flag was thrown against the Owls and a failed two-point conversion, the Owls and Lumberjacks were tied again, 12-12.

During the last minute of the first quarter, three flags were thrown in a row against the Lumberjacks.

The Owls and Lumberjacks went in the second quarter still tied 12-12.

With seven minutes left in the second quarter, Lassiter threw a 30-yard pass to Thomas at the 27-yard line.

The Lumberjacks were able to score on a 27-yard running play for the lead. Jacinto’s kick added another point. The Lumber Jacks took the lead 19-12.

On the following kickoff, Lumberjacks recovered an Owl fumble at the 25-yard line. But Warren was unable to move the ball and turned the ball over on downs. McGehee advanced to the 50-yard line. With seconds left in the quarter, the Owls scored. The two-point conversion attempt was intercepted by the Lumberjacks to end the half with Warren leading 19-18.

The Owls struck first in the third period scoring on a 50 run. This time the two-point conversion worked and the Owls went ahead 26-19.

However, the Lumberjacks quickly responded with a breakaway run by Davis who sprinted 82 yards for a touchdown. Jacinto put in a good kick tying the game for the third time, 26-26.

Tension was in the stands as the Lumberjacks went into the fourth quarter with another tie.

The tie didn’t last long when the Lumberjack offense began to push down the field to the four-yard line with nine minutes left. Lassiter pushed through the Owl’s defense scoring another touchdown. With Jacinto’s kick, the Lumberjacks were once again ahead 33-26.

With the clock ticking, Malik Day intercepted an Owl pass and ran the ball 55-yards to the end zone scoring the final touchdown with 15 seconds left on the clock. Jacinto’s PAT was perfect, giving the Lumberjacks the final score of 40-26.

The Lumberjacks executed a balanced game plan putting up 322 offensive yards, 187 in the air, and 135 on the ground.

Treylon Jackson carried the ball 15 times for 68 yards and scored a touchdown.

Lassiter had six out of ten completed passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns.

Davis scored a touchdown on an 82-yard run.

The Lumberjacks will face conference opponent Crossett (1-1) at home this Friday at 7 p.m. The Eagles lost to Star City 40-13 and shutout Hamburg 13-0 last week.
