The Bradley County Quorum Court convened for its monthly meeting on Monday, April 21, where a variety of important updates and discussions took place.
The meeting began with the calling of the roll, followed by a presentation from John Gavin of the Bradley County Extension Office. Gavin provided the court with a comprehensive update on several ongoing and upcoming initiatives. He spoke about training courses, educational meetings, vaccination clinics, and pest control, offering valuable insight into the county's efforts in these areas.
Following Gavin's update, Penny Vance, the Extension Agent for Bradley County, took the floor to share updates on the county’s Extension Homemakers Club (EHC). Vance highlighted the work of the four EHC clubs in Bradley County, emphasizing their passion for quilting and their involvement in organizing the annual PTF luncheon—one of their biggest community projects. Vance also noted the EHC’s contributions to the county fair, particularly with the organization of exhibits.
Vance also shared the exciting news of Bradley County’s active 4H program, which now boasts 10 clubs. Among the clubs, there are various groups dedicated to different interests, including a newly-formed homeschool cooking club, a shooting sports club, a sewing club, and the popular Clover Buds. Vance mentioned that a 4H O’rama is coming up, along with the upcoming Great Outdoor Youth Day. She added that this year’s 4H clubs will be competing in a variety of events, showcasing the wide range of skills and activities the youth in Bradley County are involved in.
The court then moved forward with the approval of the previous month’s meeting minutes, which passed unanimously. The treasurer’s report was also reviewed and approved, followed by the approval of the sheriff’s report.
Next, Judge Klay McKinney addressed the court with updates on recent challenges and ongoing projects. McKinney provided a report on the severe flooding that had occurred recently, with several roads washed away due to rising floodwaters. The flooding posed significant challenges for local infrastructure, and McKinney discussed the ongoing efforts to address these issues.
Additionally, McKinney provided an update on the county’s new building, expressing hope that minor repairs and details would be finalized within the next few weeks. He also announced that the county had received a $117,000 grant, which would be used to make repairs to the courthouse. As part of the courthouse renovation project, painters are expected to complete their work by May 1. Following the painting, the next step in the courthouse repairs will involve addressing electrical wiring issues.
The court then voted on and passed Ordinance 2025-4, after which the meeting was adjourned.
The meeting underscored the importance of community involvement, with updates on local clubs and ongoing county improvements. The Quorum Court continues to prioritize county development and public services, working to keep Bradley County moving forward in a positive direction. The next meeting is set for Monday, May 19 at 6 p.m.
