Lumberjacks defeat Cougars, 42-8

The Warren Lumberjacks claimed another victory on Friday night against the Helena-West Helena Cougars with a final score of 42-8.

“I thought we didn’t start out very well, we struggled, especially offensively. We had to punt twice out of the first three drives,” said Warren Lumberjack Coach Bo Hembree. “After that we settled down and started moving the ball. Defensively, we bent but didn’t break. We just have to keep getting better. We’re right around the corner from the playoffs.”

The Lumberjacks received the opening kickoff.

The Lumberjacks’ offense dropped the first couple passes and a false start penalty forced them to punt at the 37-yard line.

The Lumberjacks’ defense forced the Cougars to punt also.

Lumberjack Quarterback Maddox Lassiter threw a pass to Ervin Rivera who ran to the Cougars’ 25-yard line. A flag was thrown for a facemask penalty on the play against the Cougars penalizing them for 15 yards. The Cougars had several facemask penalties flagged against them during the game.

At 2:24 left in the first quarter, Lassiter ran the ball to the 46-yard line for a 13-yard play.

Antonio Jordan caught Lassiter’s pass at the 40-yard line and sprinted to the end zone for the first touchdown of the night. The extra point kick by Jose Jacinto was good, giving the Lumberjacks the lead, 7-0.

In the second quarter, Lassiter made an impressive 17-yard run from the 22-yard line to the 39-yard line.

At 8:55 in the second quarter, Neon’dre Thomas caught an amazing 49-yard pass from Lassiter at the end zone for another touchdown. With Jacinto’s good kick, the Lumberjacks extended the lead to 14-0.

At 5:41 in the quarter, the Cougars quarterback threw to their wide receiver at their end zone, before being intercepted by Thomas.

With the Lumberjacks moving down the field to the seven-yard line, Jordan caught the pass at the end zone for a touchdown. After Jacinto’s successful kick, the Lumberjacks led 21-0.

At 2:27 in the second quarter, Lassiter passed to Jordan who ran the ball 69 yards down to the endzone for another touchdown. With another good kick, the Lumberjacks led 28-0.

With less than a minute left in the first half, the Lumberjacks offense made it down to the 18-yard line.

Lassiter threw an 18-yard pass to Jordan who made a great jump and caught the ball at the end zone for another score. The extra point was good, giving the Lumberjacks a 35-0 lead.

Coming into the second half, the sportsmanship rule was put into effect, keeping the clock running.

At 1:51 in the third quarter, the Cougars were able to score a touchdown. Their two-point conversion was proven successful, giving them eight points.

The running clock made the third quarter pass by quickly.

At eight minutes in the final quarter, the Lumberjacks’ offense made it down to the four-yard line. Cody Weatherspoon burst through the Cougars’ defense for the final touchdown of the night. The extra point kick by kicker Miguel Mendoza proved successful, giving the Lumberjacks their final score of 42-8.

Lassiter went 15 of 24 for 315 yards and five touchdowns in the air.

Jordan had four touchdown catches and 168 receiving yards.

Thomas had one touchdown and 69 yards receiving.

Ervin Rivera and Jalin Lee both had receptions.

The Lumberjacks had a total of 422 yards on offense.

Lassiter had nine tackles on the defensive side.

Delfino Rivera had seven tackles.

Ervin Rivera had six tackles in the game.

Thomas had one interception.

The Lumberjacks will host the Hamburg Lions at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
